Who We Are:

Steve and Shanthi Bycroft established Lamp Lighters in May 2000.  Steve had been working in other countries as a short-term missionary and evangelist for the previous 4 years.  While in Sri Lanka working to establish a church he met and later married Shanthi in 1997.  Shanthi worked in the past with Campus Crusade for Christ in Sri Lanka.               

What We Plan To Do:

Our primary goal is to go to countries where the gospel has not been preached, or limited work has been done, with no or few Christian Churches.  Our goal is to establish Churches in those countries.  We want to work with the people of Sri Lanka and also in countries where Sri Lankans have immigrated.

How We Do This:

We find a contact in a country and work with them doing teaching and training to ensure they are following New Testament teachings.  A preaching crusade and additional teaching of converts is also done.

The National Evangelist already knows the language, culture, and society so these barriers are immediately broken down.    Financial support is given to the evangelist to help them until the church is, within a few years able to support them.   We also are doing social work through starting and supporting children’s homes.  Used clothing distribution, and limited financial aid for individuals to start small home based businesses.  Through these ministries we also teach and evangelize. Return trips are then planned to encourage, preach, and teach.

Where We Plan to Go

Lamp Lighters is not limited to working in one country, but will work throughout the world to establish new churches.  We have begun our work in the country of Sri Lanka for several reasons.  In the past years we have established work with some small congregations there. There is a vast need for evangelism and teaching in the country.

Where We are Presently Working:

Churches:  At present we are working with 6 churches in Sri Lanka.  Two each in the area of Jaffna, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa.  We established the two churches in Batticaloa during our stay in 2001 and 2002.

We are also working with Sri Lankan churches in the Netherlands and Belgium.  While there we hold special services and leadership training sessions as well as personal evangelism.

Children’s Homes:  Because of 19 years of civil war in Sri Lanka there are thousands of children who have lost one or both parents.  The war has also brought extreme poverty to many of the families.  We can provide a home where the children are not just physically cared for, but are given spiritual care as well. 

Currently we are sending monthly financial support to two children’s homes:

   *Bethany Children’s Home - Trincomalee, Sri Lanka

   *Bethany Children’s Home - Jaffna, Sri Lanka

Plans are to establish a home in Batticaloa within the next year.
